Dear Friends journeying in the path of Jesus,
One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Psalms 34:8. Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.
Jesus tells us in John 10:11 “I am the good Shepherd.” Again in John 10:14 Jesus says “I am the good Shepherd.”
Galatians 6:9-10 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity , let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
There are over 600 verses in the Bible that have the word “Good’ in them. The verses I listed above are to mention two things. 1) God is good. Jesus is good. He is the good Shepherd. If Jesus is telling us twice that He is good, then we need to believe Him. This is not a topic of question. Jesus demonstrated His goodness throughout His earthly ministry by addressing the needs of the people around Him and and meeting those needs.
If we don’t perceive that God is good, and have a belief system that He sends calamity and trials to teach us something, then we will be unable to see or tap into His goodness. The goodness of God is first of all to be understood from the very beginning. When God created the heavens and the earth He called them “good.” When He created mankind, He called us “very good.” Since we are created in the image of God, and He calls us “very good” then it would play out that goodness is likewise in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
“Taste and See” Christianity is experiential. Head knowledge can only go so far. Head knowledge is to lead us into experience. If we read that God is good, and believe that God is good, then we must also move towards experience. What do you notice on a daily basis that points you towards the goodness of God? God is not confined to a sunday morning church opportunity. He is with you 24-7 to demonstrate His goodness. Did He bring you encouragement today? Did He show you a sale for something you needed to buy? Did He help you accomplish what you needed? Did He give you favor in dealing with a customer? Did He help you pass a test? or help you study? Was your day filled with His joy? Did He spare you from a car accident? God is desirious of being intricately involved in every single facet of our lives. As we allow Him to occupy this place, we will see His goodness abound.
Now, we also have a responsibilty according to scripture to do good to people. Hebrews 13:16 says “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”
God likens doing good here with a sacrifice. I believe He says this because you sacrifice doing your own thing and replace it with demonstrating Jesus. Doing good for others comes in a variety of forms. Anytime we help another we demonstrate His goodness. Anyime we encourage or pray with others we demonstrate His goodness. When we release goodness towards those who mean us harm, we demonstrate Jesus. There are multiple ways we can show the goodness of God to those we come in contact with on a daily basis. This keeps us in agreement with God’s kingdom. This is a way to evangelize. God blesses us as we share His goodness with others.
I felt led to purchase a journal for the primary purpose of jotting down daily God’s goodness towards me. This is a way to release testimonies of what He has done for me so others can experience the same.
Love and Blessings
